Lindsay Patrick Lorrain - Born September 1948
Lindsay Lorrain enlisted into the CMF component of 126 Signal Squadron (Special Forces) in 1969.
After training as a field radio operator he undertook a large number of exercises with both 1 Cdo Coy and 2 Cdo
Coy as well as other army units.
He became the Troop Sergeant of 596 Signal Troop in 1975 where he served for many years, during this time with
a background in Research and Development with the PMG (PMG/Telecom/Telstra) Sgt Lorrain developed various computer
software that was able to produce unlimited morse training tapes as well as complex Signal Operating Instructions
(SOI's) to allowed the Base Radio Station to maintain radio contact over long distance with fields teams deployed
over wide tracts of Australia. Given the difficulties of High Frequency communications the SOI's allowed the troop
to provide a high level of serviceability between the HQ and the deployed Commando platoons.
In 1980 he became the first ARES Parachute Jump Instructor (PJI) having previously qualified as a Military Freefall
Parachutist and Free Fall Dispatcher.
In 1983 SSGT Lorrain was posted to the Officer Cadet Training Unit (OCTU) as an instructor.
On his return to the Squadron in 1984, WO2 Lorrain took up the position of ARES Supervisor Communications and assumed
responsibility as the Operator Training Co-coordinator. In this position WO2 radically changed the methods in
which soldiers were trained to learn and become proficient in morse code by developing electronic training aids.
Other Specialist Courses successfully completed included, Basic parachutist (200 SL descents), Static Line Dispatcher,
Small Craft Handler, Roping and Rappelling Instructor, Unarmed Combat Instructor and Small Scale Raids Commander
as well as completing 3 "Murray River Mathrons" in different TK2 canoes.
