Richard Wymer

In July 1966 Richard Wymer, a PMG technician enlisted in the Citizen's Military Forces (CMF) and became a founding member of the Melbourne based 126 Signal Squadron (Special Forces).

Signalman Wymer along with Phil Noonan, Fred Edwards, Mick Durrant and Mick Clark were trained as long distance radio operators utilising Morse Code. After a number of years the now Corporal Wymer was promoted to Sergeant and appointed Troop Sergeant 596 Signal Troop.

596 Signal Troop was responsible for providing long distance communications to the Commandos. In 1973 Sgt Wymer participated in Exercise Appian Way, at that time was the largest post WWII special forces exercise and was set in the harsh outback of Western Australia. As the HF radio operator for a Commando platoon Sgt Wymer was one of a handful of soldiers who were able to walk to the RV point and be in a fit state to continue.

In 1977 Sgt Wymer was posted as an Instructor to the Officer Cadet Training Unit and returned to the Squadron in 1980 to take up the position of Supervisor Operator Training.

In 1984 WO2 Wymer transferred to the 3rd Training Group, Puckapunyal where he remained until he retired from the ARES.
